If you have a zip file containing something that you want to try out, but are not sure how to go about using such a file, you just need to extract it.
The ability to extract zip files is built into newer versions of Windows.
- Right-click the zip file that you want to extract.
- Select "Extract All…"
This will open the Extraction Wizard. - Select "Next"
This will take you to the "Select a Destination" page. - See where the files will be extracted to
The default for WordPress themes and plugins is typically a new directory with the same name as the zip file in the same directory that the zip file is in. - Select "Next"
The files will start being extracted.
When they finish, you will see the "Extraction Complete" window. - Select "Finish" to close the wizard.
If you don’t want the extracted files displayed in a new window, uncheck the "Show extracted files" box before selecting Finish.
