If you would like to have an email address that stands out a bit and have your own domain name, this will cover setting a new email address up via cPanel with HostGator.

Step 1: Create a new eMail address

Log into your host gator cpanel account, locate the Mail section of the control panel, and select Email accounts

In the Add New Email Account section:

Adding a new email address with cPanel

Enter the name for the email account

Select the domain name that you want to use

Enter the password you want to use twice

Set a quota to note how much space it can take up
I recommend something fairly small unless you want to save all of your mail online. 10 MB is plenty if you download all of your mail. 50 MB to 100 MB is probably plenty if you keep your mail online and delete old / unwanted mail.

When done, select Create and you should see a confirmation message with the new email address shown in the list under the Current Accounts setting.

Using your new email account

Once you have created the mail account, you need to be able to make use of it. There are two primary ways of doing so:

Checking and using email online

Setting up an email client to use the email account locally

Because there are a number of email clients available, I am just going to cover accessing your email via cPanel.

Accessing webmail from the cPanel email list

Select Access Webmail from the list of emails shown in the Email Accounts panel. Note that if you select the WebMail button from the main cpanel home, you will be logging into the main account for your domain, which is probably not what you want.

You should see the below login screen ( or something similar ). Go ahead and enter the password you set for the new email account and select login.

Once you do so, you should come to a screen that allows you to choose which webmail client you want to use and/or configure the account.

Clients and Mail Setting Options in cPanel

Choose a client to log in. I’ll use Horde for this example, but any will work. Try them each to see what you prefer. Here is what Horde looks like:

The Horde Mail Client

From there, you can see your email, write email, etc.

If you want to setup your email to be read from an email client such as Mozilla Thunderbird and are not sure how to go about doing so, feel free to leave a comment with the client in question and, when I get time, I will see about putting up a quick configuration walkthrough for you.

Page: Extra Column Boxlist

This display adds an extra list of content boxes to either side of the content area for page pages.

Page: Extra Column Postlist

This display adds an extra list of posts to either side of the content area for page pages.

The posts to be displayed are set by choosing a category to pull them from for each page that uses this display.

Page: Extra Two Column With Boxlist

This display places content normally, but adds two columns below the content, one side containing content areas and the other containing a list of posts.

It can also be used to place only content areas or a post list below it if wanted.

Post: Extra Column Boxlist

This display adds an extra column of content boxes to either side of the normal post content.

Post: Extra Column Postlist

This display adds an extra column of posts pulled from a specified category to the side of the normal content.

Home: Two Column Boxlist Postlist

This display adds an extra column of content boxes next to the normally displayed posts on your home page.

Check out my home page for an example of this display in use.

Archive Pages: Two Column Boxlist Postlist

Each of the archive pages ( tag archives, date archives, author archives, and category archives ) includes a custom display that will add a box list to the side of the normally displayed posts, just as the home page display for this set does.

404 Pages: 2 Column With List

The 404 page for this set can be configured to display one or two content columns of content areas as well as a list of posts at the top on either side.

This is a good way to showcase various features of your site and give people the latest information from you if they happen to hit a page that simply does not exist.

More (and more flexible) custom displays

A custom display installer, so you don’t have to upload them via ftp.

Quick sets. These are saved option groups that you can create and/or apply to instantly change the entire look of your site. Perfect for trying out different looks quickly as well as designing locally and applying your finished look to your production site.

Better interoperability with Google AdSense and Analytics

A more robust lockout system so you can choose to refer those who are not logged in to your login page, show them a static page, or show them a brief maintenance type blurb.

Finally, after a good month and a half of solid coding, I feel that The Privateer Theme is ready for the public.

Feel free to grab a copy of The Privateer Theme and check it out, or find out more about it at the Privateer Theme Page.

Note: 1.0 is outdated and has a few bugs within it, but is still available to any interested in using it. It also lacks the new features available in 1.2.

So what does The Privateer Bring to the table?

Complete separation of WordPress Post/Page objects and the WordPress HTML Templates

Each major template page ( single.php, page.php, home.php, etc. ) has its own optional kicker, title, byline, and content areas, which you can populate as you see fit.

Both major wordpress objects ( pages and posts ) can have their individual pieces turned on and/or off.

A robust admin panel

Setup and style the template page level items.

Setup search engine optimization for the template.

Setup and style post and page objects shown via the template.

Override the default display with drop in custom displays.

Site wide view blocking

Turn your site off at will, blocking potential visitors based upon their permissions and displaying a custom message or page to anyone without the necessary permissions.

Good for heavy maintenance or just running a private members only site.

Drop in Custom Displays

Custom displays are much like templates, but they are simple drop in codes that override the content section of a particular template type.

Each has its own built in admin menu and page/post custom displays can be chosen on a page by page or post by post basis…and have individual options available within the wordpress page/post editor.

Activate multiple custom displays on non page/post templates to have pages of particular types served via a randomly installed custom display or activate only one and have it used to show that template consistently.

Configurable navigation bars of various types

Multi page navigation bars ( numeric or text )

Next / Previous post navigation bars

Ancestor navigation bars

Child page navigation bars

See the general look of The Privateer

This site is running the privateer theme.

The home page is using the Store Home 2 Column Custom display.

The Store Home 2 Column Custom display is using the Product Showcase Single Post Custom Display

The 404 page is using a custom 404 Not Found display. You can see an example here.

The Privateer Theme page is using the Category Showcase Custom Display.

All of these will be available shortly.

Yes, Hub Pages is a social networking site, not a direct advertising site.

However, what I am advocating is not placing large advertisements on Hub Pages, but rather providing the Hub Pages community with solid information that they can use while giving those who like the content you provide a way to get more information.

Whether you are selling commercial goods, religion, politicians, ideas, or anything else…you are in fact selling when you communicate unless you are simply relating a store.

Hub Pages for Marketing Purposes

As those who run Hub Pages note, they don’t want their site used for marketing purposes ( by which I assume they mean commercial marketing / product sales / etc. ).

Purely promotional offers and Hubs designed only to promote other sites or businesses are not allowed. In particular, the following actions are likely to get your hubs flagged:
* linking repeatedly to the same site within a hub or across many hubs
* including links to a page that contains largely the same content as your hub
* linking to products or services unrelated to a Hub’s content
* including more than 2 links to any one domain
* short “teasers” with links to “read more” at another site
* including promotional links on content that is unoriginal (i.e. not exclusive to HubPages); promotional links can only be included on content that is exclusive to HubPages
* linking to the same domain in the body of the text AND in an RSS feed

Please note that promotional links are links that you have any interest in promoting (your blog, your Website, affiliate offers, etc.). Links to well-known Web resources which you don’t have any personal interest in (like Wikipedia, news sites, encyclopedias, open directories, etc.) are exempt from this limitation.

However, with that said, you certainly can promote your site and/or store via Hub Pages as long as you pay attention to the above rules _and_ provide real content that has value for people.

For example, if you sell parts for making something or finished products which people can make themselves, you could create a how to article showing people how to make something…and point people in the direction of your store (offering the needed tools) or an article on your site (containing a list of necessary tools or in depth information about them), or even an example of the finished product.

The main thing is not to be overly promotional ( I think that such is a bad marketing idea anywise…but perhaps I am overly critical of having people trying to sell me things. ), but to provide useful information along with links that support such information.

Create more than just selling hubs

If you enjoy writing, share other things as well!

As Hub Pages has a profile page, you can place a few links within it…and those who come across your content might decide to find out more about you…and visit the sites you link.

Done in this manner you don’t even need to provide links to what you sell. In fact, you could sell shoes and write about skydiving…and you would still get some traffic ( and a good backlink ) for your efforts.

Getting setup with Hub Pages

Be sure to use the "guide" link at the bottom of Hub Pages when you first get started as it will walk you through everything in a very nice manner. Normally I write up a guide…but they did such a good job that I don’t much see the point.

You might even make a little extra money without selling anything.

If you take the time to write articles for your web site, it can be well worth your time to setup affiliate accounts with places that offer items related to what you talk about.

What is an Affiliate Account?

An affiliate account lets you be the equivalent of a commission based salesman, getting a percentage of each sale which results from your forwarding people to the place you have an account with.

If you write an article talking about something you sell and make reference to related items which you do not sell, you can turn those references into affiliate links and, should someone follow them and buy the item in question, make a little extra cash by doing so.

Affiliate Accounts for Online Sellers

Of course, sending people to your competition is not typically the best way to increase sales, so you will want to be sure of a couple of things when creating an affiliate account and using affiliate links on your site:

The people you create an affiliate account with should not be direct competition to you.
For example, if you sell jewelry, you would not want to create affiliate accounts with places that sell the types of jewelry you sell, especially if their prices are lower.
Instead, you might check about for affiliate accounts with jewelry cleaning services, people who make custom made jewelry, or any place else which offers items you talk about but does not compete with you directly.

When placing affiliate links you should make sure that they open in a new window
If you neglect to do so, people will tend to check out what you reference and then never find their way back to your site.
Be sure to add target="_blank" to your affiliate links so that your site stays open in their browser when they follow your links.

Amazon Affiliate Links

Amazon can be a good place to get an affiliate account with, though their initial percentages are quite low. The upside is that once you start making more than a few affiliate sales per month your percentage increases to a much more reasonable level.

As an Amazon affiliate, you have a lot of options for creating affiliate links, but I will focus on text links which can be wrapped around images or phrases in your articles.

An Amazon affiliate text link has two parts:

The link itself, which contains your referral code

A pixel image to track impressions ( page views )

You can use the text link just as you would any other link.

For the pixel image, I recommend creating a custom style that makes the image pretty much invisible and then placing pixels for each link on a page at the bottom of the page.

Pixel Image Styling

To prevent pixel images from showing up on your page in an odd manner, you can create a custom css class for them and add that class to each pixel image. For example:

.pixel-image {
 border: none;
 padding: none;
 margin: none;
 width: 1px;
 height: 1px;
 display: inline;
}

For users of my wordpress theme ( The Privateer ) or the Atahualpa Theme, you can add the above style to your HTML Footer Inserts.

Otherwise, you can add it either in a <style> block inside the header of the html page or a stylesheet file.

Once you do so, you can then put pixel images at the bottom of pages as follows:

<img class="pixel-image" src="…" />

You pixel images will then show up as a list of single pixels at the bottom of your page and most likely not distract viewers.

Affiliate Link Usage

In addition to using them on your own site, you can often use affiliate links anywhere that you can use a normal link.

Some common ways to use affiliate links:

In an email footer

In a forum footer

On sites such as squidoo, hubpages, wetpaint, etc.

On blog posts

Creating an Amazon affiliate text link

If you setup an affiliate account with Amazon, you can create affiliate links for specific items by doing the following:

Find the page on Amazon.com that has the item you want to link to.

For this example, I’ll use the book "Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS".

While I have not read it, it gets excellent reviews, it is not terribly expensive, and it is could conceivably help people build nice looking sites.

Select the "Link to this page" button

The link looks like the displayed image and is at the top of the page on your affiliate bar when you are logged in.

If it is not there, then log into your affiliate account and make sure to turn on the bar.

Wait for the "Customize and Get HTML" page to load

It should look something like the following:

Select your Tracking ID and Link Type

In the above red outlined sections, be sure to select the tracking id for your site and choose "Text Link".

Once you do so, the page will change to look like the following:

Enter your text and get the html and pixel image

Specify the text you want to use for the link and then copy the html, which will contain both the text link and the pixel image.

If you are using the text link to wrap an image in, you can clear the text within the link without worry.

From there, place the link into your page where you want it, add the above referenced class="pixel-image" entry to the pixel image, and then place the pixel image somewhere on the page.

A completed example link:

Once finished, you can then create links out of various sections of text.

Perhaps you are writing an article on how to use html and css to create nice looking pages for a web site and mention the book Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS to your readers.

Done properly, you can do both of the following at once:

Provide excellent references for your readers.

Show them where to get good deals and get paid to do so with no extra cost to them

Get How to Edit WordPress by adding a custom admin panel today!

Finding accurate tutorials with specific examples showing how to edit WordPress can waste a lot of time without turning up any good results.

It took me a few days of pouring over various existing themes and hunting around the internet to before I finally figured out how to customize wordpress for my own purposes.

If you would like a straight forward example of creating options for your own WordPress theme and building an admin panel so that you ( or others ) can easily change those options, then I have put together a short, concise manual that may be exactly what you are looking for.

Within this short 23 page manual you will find everything you need to:

Create an admin panel for your WordPress theme

Handle processing and display of your WordPress theme

Use CSS and JavaScript within your admin panel

Display status codes to users after processing requests

Write a php class to handle all of your admin panels functions

Read and write theme options to the builtin WordPress database

Add functionality beyond updating options to your admin panel

With that being said, this manual does not cover more advanced topics such as:

Storing theme options in custom database structures

Creating admin panels with multiple tabs

Creating top level WordPress admin menus

However, if you know how to create tabbed html pages and/or use php to access a database directly, then this manual should get you going on those things as well.

Once you have finished this guide, you will know how to edit wordpress by adding options to your favorite wordpress theme and building a panel to make updating your option settings a breeze.

Also included with this manual is a modified version of the default wordpress theme which contains an admin menu having seven options and illustrating how to use the following major form controls to manage your options:

Text Boxes

Text Areas

Check Boxes

Radio Buttons

Select Menus

Multi-select Menus

Multi-option Check Boxes

The included ( very basic ) theme is not meant for normal use, but rather to clearly illustrated how to customize WordPress with extra options.

For only $7.00, this manual ( and the included code ) could save you hours or even days spent trying to track down solid information showing how to edit wordpress for your own purposes.
