Page Navbar Configuration

In The Privateer Theme, there are a variety of different types of navigation bars which you can configure individually depending upon the page template being used to generate content.

Not all page templates make use of the various navigation bars, but the following bars can be configured on a template by template basis if they are avialable:

The Privateer Navigation Bars
The Multi Page Nav Bar The Paged Comments Blurb The Next and Previous Nav Bar
The Ancestor Nav Bar The Child Nav Bar

The Multi Page Nav Bar

paged-nav-show-items

Here you can specify which page level items should be shown when someone moves to secondary pages within a particular page template, so as to avoid constantly displaying redundant data to users.

Check any items that you want to have shown on non-primary pages.

paged-nav-alt-secondary-titles

The alternative titles for secondary pages option can be used to add to or alter the title when it is being displayed on non primary pages.

As noted, %page_number% can be used as a placeholder to display the current page number and %page_title% can be used to display the title of the current page.

paged-nav-placement

You can choose where to have the multi page navigation bar shown or not to display it at all.

paged-nav-bar-display-type

The multi page navigation bar can be displayed either as a text bar with previous and next page entries or as a numeric bar displaying available page numbers for quick navigation.

The numberic bar is built dynamically and should always display the next and previous two pages, the first and last page, and various other pages depending on the number of pages available.

paged-nav-numeric-prefix-with

The Prefix Width option can be used to place extra text before the displayed page numbers.

You can use the %template_type%, %category_name%, %tag_name%, %date_name%, and %search_terms% placeholders to display that information dynamically in the prefix if you so choose.

paged-nav-textual-extra-options

In the Extra Settings for Text Navigation Display Only area, you can set the following:

  • Older Link Text
    • This is the text that will be used to navigate to older entries
  • Newer Link Text
    • This is the text that will be used to navigate to newer entries
  • First Page Name
    • If set, this will be used at the top of the bar to give viewers a link back to the first page.
    • It will only be displayed when the viewer is not on the first page.
  • Home Link Name
    • If set, this will be displayed between the next and previous links and take people to your sites home page.
    • Only displayed if not on the Home Page Template.

The Paged Comments Blurb

The paged comments blurb can be set up to display on comment pages.

It is designed to replace the body of the content being talked about, doing two things:

  1. Cutting down on redundancy
  2. Preventing search engines from lowering your sites ranking for having duplicate information.

This blurb is only ever shown on templates that have comments enabled, typically the Single Page and Single Post templates.

pagedcom-nav-show-items

Via the above displayed options you can specify which parts of the page you want shown on secondary comments pages.

pagedcom-setup-blurb

Under the above displayed Setup a custom header blurb section, you can create a short message to display in place of the post content on secondary comment pages.

Leave this empty to have your post or page object data displayed as normal.

To have a message replace the contents of the wordpress post or page object, enter a blurb ( using the displayed placeholder tags if you want ) and select the type of html tag that you want it to be displayed within.

The Next and Previous Nav Bar

The next and previous nav bar is used on the Single Post template to allow easy navigation to older and/or newer posts which have been made.

singlenav-option-setup

The single navigation bar has five display configuration options:

  1. Nav Location:
    • This setting notes where the navigation bar should be displayed.
    • Top: Show at the top of the post or page object content
    • Middle: Show just above the comments area
    • Bottom: Show under the comments area
  2. Nav Type:
    • Use this setting to specify which side of the navigation bar older and newer links should be displayed on.
  3. Older Link Name:
    • Set the name for the link to older posts.
    • Use the %link placeholder to have the post name displayed.
  4. Newer Link Name:
    • Set the name for the link to newer posts.
    • Use the %link placeholder to have the post name displayed.
  5. Home Link Name:
    • If you want a link to the homepage of your site displayed in the center of the bar, set the text to be used for it here.

The Ancestor Nav Bar

The ancestor navigation bar is used to allow easy navigation to parent pages of the currently displayed WordPress page object.

This bar is normally only displayed via the Single Page template.

nav-ancestor-location

The above displayed option, Ancestor Nav Loc, is used to note where the ancestor navigation bar should be displayed.

  • Top means the very top of the template page, above all other content.
  • Middle means at the very top of the post list area. If you are not displaying page level data then this is the same as Top.
  • Bottom means at the very bottom of the template page, below all other content.

nav-ancestor-list-styling

The List styling options are used to add extra content or css classes to the list which displays the ancestor navigation bar.

  • Extra Initial Item
    • You can enter an extra list item here which will be displayed before the ancestor pages are displayed.
    • You can use html here to create links.
  • Item Preface Char
    • If you want an extra character ( or word or whatever ) displayed at the front of each navigation item, you can enter that here.
    • Useful for having special characters as dividers between items
    • For example: ♥ (♥), » (»), etc.
  • Extra CSS Classes
    • If you want to create custom css classes and use them for this list, you can do so and enter their names here, separated by spaces.
    • If you want only one extra css class here, just enter it without any spaces.

nav-ancestor-preface-text

The Ancestor Nav Preface Text setting will display whatever text is entered above the list.

If you do not want extra content at the top of the ancestor nav bar, leave this empty.

nav-ancestor-home-index-link

If you want a link to your homepage displayed here, enter the html for it here.

For example, <a href="http://www.yoursite.com/">Site Name</a>

nav-ancestor-current-page

If you want the name of the currently displayed page to be displayed after all of the parent page objects in the list, set Show Current? to yes.

nav-ancestor-incremental-margin

The Incremental margin setting is used to give each item after the first one in the list an extra margin equal to its position – 1 times the number specified here (in pixels).

For example, if you enter 10 here, the first item would be displayed normally, the second item would be shifted 10 pixels to the right, the third item would be shifted 20 pixels to the right, etc.

Using this together with custom styling, you can get some interesting looking parent navigation bars like those pictured above.

The Child Nav Bar

The child navigation bar displays all immediate children of the current page.

Currently, it does not display any page levels below that.

nav-child-display

The basic navigation settings for the child navigation bar are:

  1. Nav Location:
    • This determines where the child navigation bar will be displayed.
    • Top will show it at the very top of the page template.
    • Middle will show it at the top of the wordpress page object data ( the top of the Single Page templates post list )
    • Bottom will display it at the very bottom of the page template.
    • If drawn in the same area as the ancestor nav bar, the child nav bar will always be displayed after the ancestor nav bar unless you do interesting things with cascading style sheets.
  2. Nav Type:
    • The child navigation bar can be drawn as either an unordered list or a table.
  3. Extra Initial Item:
    • If you wish to have an extra item at the start of the child navigation bar, whether it is displayed as a table or an unordered list, enter it here.
    • This can be a link.

nav-child-preface

If you want extra information drawn before the child navigation bar, enter it into the Top Content setting.

Both html and javascript should work fine here.

nav-child-postface

If you want extra information drawn after the child navigation bar, enter it into the Bottom Content setting.

Both html and javascript should work fine here.

nav-child-list-display

If you are displaying the child navigation bar as a list, there are three extra options which can be configured:

  1. Item Preface Char:
    • Use this to place extra information before each item in the list.
    • Commonly, this might be something like → (&rarr;) or ♦ (&diams;)
  2. Extra CSS Styles:
    • If you want to use extra css classes that you have created and put either in core_css.php or the Privateer – General Display – CSS and JS Inserts – CSS Inserts option, enter the names of them here, with spaces between them.
  3. Item Step (in pixels):
    • If you want to have each item in the list stepped in by a particular number of pixels from the previous item in the list, enter the number of pixels you want them stepped in by here.

nav-child-table-display

If you have the child navigation bar set to display as a table, there are two further options to configure:

  1. Extra CSS Classes:
    • This sets the names of extra css classes to be used for the list.
  2. Columns Per Row:
    • This sets the number of child pages that should be linked in each table row.
