Meta Title

page-seo-meta-title

The meta title is used to give each page on your site a title, which is visible in most browsers on the top status bar and the current tab (if the browser supports tabs).

It is also commonly used in search engines as the headline when displaying links to web pages, so it can be used to grab attention from viewers and help them to choose your pages over someone elses.

When creating a meta title, you can use Page Level Variables ( see the Page Display Configuration page for a list ) within the meta-title.

Meta Description

The meta description is text placed within the header of an html page.

It is not seen by users normally, but can be used by search engines to display a blurb about the page when a user comes across it in search results.

Like the meta title, the meta description can make use of Page Level Variables.

Meta Keywords

page-seo-meta-keywords

Meta keywords are words that are placed within the header of your html document to help search engines know what they are looking at.

These days, due to heavy abuse by a lot of people, they aren’t paid much attention by some search engines, but are used by others.

You can set keywords here that will automatically be included by all pages using the template in question.

It is worth noting that The Privateer theme strips out words of two letters or less as well as the words And, For, and The.

Auto Keyword Tags

page-seo-auto-tags

The Auto Keyword Tags option allows you to specify how many tags (if any) should be automatically included as keywords on pages displayed by the template in question.

Typically, this is only of use on the tag archives template and the single post template.

Auto Keyword Categories

page-seo-auto-categories

This option is used to specify how many categories you want to have automatically used as keywords for pages generated by the template in question.

Normally this is only of any use by pages generated by the Category Archive and Single Post templates.

Auto Keyword Titles

page-seo-auto-title

The auto keyword titles option specifies whether or not you want the title for pages created by the template to automatically be parsed and used as meta keywords.

Auto Keyword Subtitles

page-seo-auto-subtitle

Auto Keyword Subtitles allows pages generated by the template to automatically use any subtitles which have been setup as meta keywords.

No Open Directory Desc

page-seo-open-directory-project

The Use Custom Meta Description Instead of Open Directory option lets you choose whether you want to have hand crafted meta descriptions for your pages or to allow search engines that allow the noodp meta tag to create meta descriptions for you via the open directory project.

For best results, I highly recommend that you use custom meta descriptions rather than whatever happens to be found in the open directory project.

No Yahoo Directory Desc

page-seo-yahoo-directory

The use custom meta description instead of Yahoo Directory option allows you to choose whether to have the Yahoo search engine use its own directory to pull meta descriptions from or to use your hand crafted meta descriptions instead.

For best results, I recommend using your own hand crafted meta descriptions.

No Index

page-seo-robots-noindex

The No Index robots meta tag is used to tell search engine robots ( and any other robots that are not malicious) not to index your site.

If you have pages that you do not want to show up in search results, be sure to set this to Yes on them.

No Follow

page-seo-robots-nofollow

If you have pages where you do not want the links on them to be followed by search engines, you should set this to Yes on them.

Use Canonical

page-seo-meta-canonical

The canonical robots meta tag is used to help search engines tell that different pages should actually be treated as the same page.

For example, if you use the <!–nextpage–> tag within wordpress post or page objects to split them into multiple pages, this would let search engines know to count each of them as being the same pages for page rank purposes.

This also helps if you use paged comments.

Under normal usage, I would recommend that this be set to yes for the Single Post and Single Page templates and be set to No for all other templates.
