If you would like to have an email address that stands out a bit and have your own domain name, this will cover setting a new email address up via cPanel with HostGator.

Step 1: Create a new eMail address

Log into your host gator cpanel account, locate the Mail section of the control panel, and select Email accounts

In the Add New Email Account section:

Adding a new email address with cPanel

Enter the name for the email account

Select the domain name that you want to use

Enter the password you want to use twice

Set a quota to note how much space it can take up
I recommend something fairly small unless you want to save all of your mail online. 10 MB is plenty if you download all of your mail. 50 MB to 100 MB is probably plenty if you keep your mail online and delete old / unwanted mail.

When done, select Create and you should see a confirmation message with the new email address shown in the list under the Current Accounts setting.

Using your new email account

Once you have created the mail account, you need to be able to make use of it. There are two primary ways of doing so:

Checking and using email online

Setting up an email client to use the email account locally

Because there are a number of email clients available, I am just going to cover accessing your email via cPanel.

Accessing webmail from the cPanel email list

Select Access Webmail from the list of emails shown in the Email Accounts panel. Note that if you select the WebMail button from the main cpanel home, you will be logging into the main account for your domain, which is probably not what you want.

You should see the below login screen ( or something similar ). Go ahead and enter the password you set for the new email account and select login.

Once you do so, you should come to a screen that allows you to choose which webmail client you want to use and/or configure the account.

Clients and Mail Setting Options in cPanel

Choose a client to log in. I’ll use Horde for this example, but any will work. Try them each to see what you prefer. Here is what Horde looks like:

The Horde Mail Client

From there, you can see your email, write email, etc.

If you want to setup your email to be read from an email client such as Mozilla Thunderbird and are not sure how to go about doing so, feel free to leave a comment with the client in question and, when I get time, I will see about putting up a quick configuration walkthrough for you.

Installing wordpress is fairly quick and simple with hosts offering cpanel access.

In order to use these instructions, you will need:

A hosting provider that offers cpanel access

While it is true that WordPress was created as blog software, it works extremely well for managing a site dedicated to driving more traffic to your online store and can be used by people whether or not they know the ins and out of web site creation.

Finding the WordPress Installer in CPanel

Log into cpanel

Locate the “Software / Services” section and select “Fantastico De Luxe”

Once the fantastico page loads, locate the Blogs section on the left and select WordPress

Installing WordPress in cpanel via fantastico

Once the WordPress options page loads, select "New Installation"

The WordPress installation page will come up:

Select the domain to install on
You can choose your main site (recommended) or a subdomain
Subdomains look like http://test.whatever.com/

Choose the directory to install on
I recommend leaving this empty.

Enter an administrator username
This will be the username you log into wordpress with.

Enter an administrator password
Use a reasonably strong password.
• Creating a strong password

Include at least 2 uppercase letters

Include at least 2 lowercase letters

Include at least 2 numbers

Include at least 1 symbol

Enter an Admin Nickname
This is the name that will be used as "Author" for posts and comments.

Enter an Admin Email
This is the email admin notifications will be sent to.
Instructions for creating a new email address.

Enter your new sites name
This will be displayed at the top of each page.

Enter a short description for your site
This will be displayed just under the title.
I recommend something short and descriptive using at least one domain keyword.

Select "Install WordPress"
This will take you to the confirmation page.

On the confirmation page, confirm the installation and note whether or not you want the install information sent to your admin e-mail. I recommend not having it sent so as to avoid having your admin account information intercepted. It is rare, but can happen.

Once you confirm the install, WordPress will be installed on your domain.

Verifying that your WordPress install worked

Load your domain to see if wordpress appears to be installed. If your domain is not yet reachable, load the temporary domain your host gave you to check…though be warned that it will look quite garbled until your domain is available directly.

If your domain is working, go to http://yourdomainname/wp-admin and log in.

Recommended next steps

Once you have gotten wordpress installed, you might want to consider doing the following before you start working on your site:

Hardening the wordpress database against simple script attacks

Rewriting URLs to avoid being penalized for dual search entries
