The ability to extract zip files is built into newer versions of Windows.

  1. Right-click the zip file that you want to extract.
  2. Select "Extract All…"
    This will open the Extraction Wizard.
  3. Select "Next"
    This will take you to the "Select a Destination" page.
  4. See where the files will be extracted to
    The default for WordPress themes and plugins is typically a new directory with the same name as the zip file in the same directory that the zip file is in.
  5. Select "Next"
    The files will start being extracted.
    When they finish, you will see the "Extraction Complete" window.
  6. Select "Finish" to close the wizard.
    If you don’t want the extracted files displayed in a new window, uncheck the "Show extracted files" box before selecting Finish.
