PWS FCG

The PWS Featured Content Gallery plugin is a heavily modified version of the Featured Content Gallery plugin offered by the guys at iePlexus.com.

The code has been re-written into a class structure to reduce namespace conflicts ( plugin conflicts ), to add fairly full featured error reporting, to add post and page editor panels so that one can set it up within the post and page editors more easily, to add more display by options, and to allow multiple featured content galleries to be placed on a single site.

  • Status: Beta
  • Availability: Privateer Theme owners.
See your members – products page to download.

Like the original, it still has javascript conflicts with certain other plugins in certain browsers, hence the reason that I still consider it to be a beta plugin.

Unlike the original, when you do not have things set up properly, you can view the page source to read any and all known errors so that tracking down configuration problems is much simpler.

PWS FCG Usage

Normal Usage

Install the plugin and configure the default display of the plugin via the Settings – PWS WP Featured Content Gallery menu.

Use the shortcode: % pwsfcg % ( without spaces ) to place the gallery where you want it.

Placing extra galleries

To place different galleries on the same site, you can use an alternate version of the shortcode to note which options should be used to determine what to display in the gallery:

  • % pwsfcg:optionlist %

Options are explained within the plugins admin panel, allowing you to set the following:

  • The method to use when determining what to display
( any, ids, cat, tag, author )
  • The IDs of pages or posts to be used
( only valid when method is set to ids )
  • The name of a category to choose items from
( only valid when method is cat )
  • The slug of a tag to choose items from
( only valid when method is tag )
  • The name of an author to choose items from
( only valid when method is author )
  • The number of items to be displayed ( always requires at least two, not valid for the ids method )
  • Whether to display items randomly on each page load or to display in date or id order

For backwards compatibility, you can choose to have the plugin use the IE Plexus meta data names, but this is not recommended as their names are very generic and conflict with those of certain other plugins

Note for Privateer Theme Owners

Don’t forget that the Privateer has built in shortcode support for this plugin…so you can place galleries not only within the posts and pages, but also within the extra template areas that the Privateer offers, the Header ( via the custom bars or the custom content sections of the logo bars ), or the Footer.

Done properly, you can even place them above or below the sidebars. ( set both sidebars to the same side and configure the gallery to be narrower than the width of both sidebars )

Upcoming Modifications

Once I have some free time, I’m going to do some research, figure out why the javascript conflicts with certain other javascript out there, and fix it so that it _should_ be conflict free.
