This basic guide is designed to get you up and running with the Privateer Theme quickly and efficiently.
While there are tons of options and menus within the Privateer Theme, you can ignore most of them while getting your web site set up.
Sections
Using these instructions you can, once comfortable with the menus, build out entire sites very quickly.
All you really need to do with the theme ( provided you like one of the included or downloadable skins ) is apply a skin, tweak the header / sidebars / footer, and start building out your content.
Normally, the Privateer Theme is provided in a Zip archive that contains not only the theme, but other files as well.
Because of this, you should extract the downloaded zip archive and refer to the included readme for detailed instructions on installing the theme.
Normally, the following method will get the theme installed properly:
- Extract the downloaded zip archive
- Locate the privateer zip archive included with the extracted files.
- Extract the privateer zip archive
- Locate the privateer folder that is contained within the privateer zip archive.
- Upload the privateer folder to your wordpress themes directory ( typically /wp-content/themes )
- Via the WordPress admin panel, go to Apperance – Themes, locate the Privateer Theme, preview it, and activate it.
Once you choose to activate the Privateer Theme, the necessary database structures will be created, default options will be loaded into the database, and things should work smoothly.
Once you have installed the Privateer, the first thing to do is to decide upon a starting look…unless you are satisfied with the default look.
The skin interface is located in the following menu:
- Privateer → Quick Display
There, you should see the included skins list.
Choose one of the included skins and then select the Activate Style Set option at the bottom of the screen to apply it.
Notes:
- You can click on the small images next to each skin to see a larger image of it.
- You can edit the skins before applying them to quickly change the colors used and/or image paths.
- If using a skin that comes with a banner, be sure to copy the associated header file to your /privateer/images/header directory and remove any other header images found there from it.
Each included skin should have a readme file located in the /privateer/stylesets/read-me/ directory, containing any special instructions needed to get things looking right.
Once you have applied your chosen skin, reload the site and you should see that it looks very much as anticipated. If not, be sure to check the readme for that skin.
Within the Privateer Theme, the header of your web site is created by choosing one or more horizontal bars to use and configuring them via their admin menus.
To get started, go to the following menu:
- Privateer – General Display – Header Setup
The Configure Header Area option located there is what controls which horizontal bars will be displayed and in what order.
The other menus which are located beneath the Header Setup menu are used to configure the horizontal bars that you have chosen to set up on your site.
Each option has information associated with it to help you see what the option does.
Choose which header bars you want to use, enter their codes in the order that you want them displayed ( left = topmost, right = bottommost ), and adjust each bars options as wanted.
Note: Many options are styling options designed to have css options entered into them.
The Privateer Theme has two sidebars currently, which can be individually styled and placed on whichever side of the content area you want.
To edit the sidebars, use the following menu:
- Privateer – HTML Entities – Sidebars
There, you will find options to do the following for each sidebar:
- Set the side to display the sidebar on (left or right).
Note that if you place both sidebars on the same side, Sidebar 1 is always shown to the left of Sidebar 2. - Set the width of the sidebar
- Choose which WordPress templates to display the sidebar on
This means you can have one sidebar show on certain templates and the other show on other templates. - Choose any pages, posts, and/or categories that you do not want the sidebar displayed on.
Note that you can also turn a sidebar off for specific posts or pages within the post and page editors - Style the sidebar
- Enter any extra content you want shown outside of the sidebar above or below it ( and style such contents containers )
- If you set both sidebars on the same side, you can also choose to span the areas above / below them so that whatever you enter in will take up the space above _both_ sidebars instead of just one of them.
Once you have the sidebars placed where you want them and have made any tweaks to their styles, you can set up the styles for the widgets displayed within them.
At this time, the widget styling is shared by both sidebars, so keep that in mind when altering them.
Use the following menus for widget styling:
- Privateer – HTML Entities – Widgets
General widget styling - Privateer – HTML Entities – WP Calendar
The built in wordpress calendar - Privateer – HTML Entities – PVT WP3 Menu
Options for the WP3 Menu Plugin ( included with the the Privateer Theme ) - Privateer – HTML Entities – Login Form
Styling for the WordPress 3.0 Login Form
Note:
Each sidebar is placed into a column, which can be styled via the Privateer – General Display – Column Style and Sticky menu.
If the sidebars are not placed together, then styling for them is via the Sidebar One Column Style and Sidebar Two Column Style options. If they are placed next to each other, then styling for them is done via the Sidebar Joinder Column Style.
In the Privateer Theme, the Footer can be configured and styled via the following menu:
- Privateer – General Display – Site Footer
There, you can style the footer area and include the content that you want via the following options:
Configure Footer Bars
If you want to use any of the header bars within the footer, you can set the shortcodes for them here in the order that you want them displayed.
Configuration and styling for the bars is still done via the various bar configuration menus under the Header Setup menu.
You can use the Footer Bar Placement option to note where you want the header bars to be shown in relation to the other footer content areas.
Footer: Content
Enter the content you want displayed in your footer here.
This section can be styled via the included styling options.
Footer: Credits
This is a second footer content area, displayed beneath the first footer content area.
There is nothing special about it, but it is useful if you want to place header bars between two sections of the footer.
Show number of queries and timer
If you want, you can choose to have the number of queries used for a page load as well as the time taken to do so shown either within html comments or visibly at the bottom of the footer using this option.
Note:
By default, the Privateer Theme has "Powered by WordPress and the Privateer Theme" within the Footer Credits field.Remove either or both as you see fit.
The Privateer Theme has admin menus for altering how each of the primary WordPress templates displays information.
It also has admin menus for setting up default styles ( site wide ) and default archive styles ( to give a special, consistent look to your archive pages ), which can be overridden by individual templates as you see fit.
The Template Content ( the list of posts, individual posts, etc. ) are placed within a column that can be styled via the Privateer – General Display – Column Style and Sticky – Center Column style.

The Styling Only menus ( Default Page and Archives ) have three tabs each:
- Page Styling: Styling page level sections of the template
- Nav Styling: Style available navigation bars
- Post Styling: Style post level sections of the template
The normal Template menus have the above menus ( in case you need to override something for a particular template ) as well as the following extra menus:
- Page Display
Options to place extra content into the template and configure how posts are shown on the page - S.E.O.
Options for setting up search optimization for the template. For Single Post and Single Page, the wordpress post and page editors have override options available so you can set most of these options on a page by page basis. - Page Nav
Options for configuring any navigation bars which could potentially be shown on the template. - Post Display
Options for setting up how pieces of each post are displayed, adding extra content areas, and ( for multi page templates only ) choosing how many columns to display any post list in and specifying any ads that should be mixed in with them. - Custom Displays
For managing any configurable template overrides that are available for the current template. Typically these are used to add boxes to one side of the main content, show a column of posts next to the main content, etc.
Normally, the defaults will be fine on these until you become more comfortable with the theme.
When styling the content areas, try to remember to place styling that you want to be used consistently in the Default Page menu rather than individual template configuration menus.
If you want to use a favicon for your site, you can use the following menu to do so:
- Privateer – General Display – Favicon
You can choose to use one of those that come with the theme or to upload your own favicon to /privateer/images/favicon and enter the name of it in the option box.
The Privateer Theme comes with a lot of extra functionality which you can configure within the admin menus.
Here are some of the items that can be configured and the menus that they can be found in:

Privateer – Global Settings – e-Junkie
Use this menu to set up information about your e-junkie account if you use e-Junkie.
The above may seem like a lot of work, but when boiled down it can be simple as:
- Install the Privateer Theme
- Activate the Privateer Theme
- Apply a skin to the Privateer
- Choose your header bars, if you want different ones
- Choose your sidebar placement, if you want it to be different
- Set up your site footer, if you want it to be different.
Don’t let all of the menus and options scare you…as they are there primarily to give you the ability to do what you want with the theme…but are for the most part un-necessary to start with.
